Misconceptions Regarding Beta Chi Theta

Indian Frat

There is a tendency for people to call us an "Indian frat". There are two things wrong with that term. First of all, we prefer to be called a fraternity. See What is a Fraternity? to understand why. Also, although we are a South Asian interest social fraternity, we are open to males of any background. In fact, we have brothers of all races and ethnicities.

Hazing

Another misconception is that we haze.  This is a common misconception generally associated with all fraternities. However Beta Chi Theta is a strictly non-hazing fraternity. Instead our New Member Education Process (informally known as 'pledge') focuses on learning about the history and values of the fraternity and getting to know fellow members through team building activities that will help to improve interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.

Bad Grades

Most people would think that because we are a social fraternity we put little emphasis on academics. This notion could not be more wrong. Academics is one of our six pillars and brothers are encouraged to do well in their classes. All members are required to maintain a minimum GPA and we have study plans and tutoring sessions in place to help our brothers achieve their academic goals.

Exclusive

Brotherhood is the most important pillar in our fraternity. As such, we spend a lot of time together, whether it's at brotherhood retreats, organizing events, studying or just hanging out. The result is that we might seem exclusive, however we are far from it. We have many friends outside of the organization and all brothers are strongly encouraged to be involved in other organizations.

BXO

Some people refer to us as 'BXO' (Bee Eks Oh), which is an inaccurate nickname. This misconception comes from the fact that our letters Beta Chi and Theta look like the English letters B, X and O.  Nonetheless, we prefer to be called Beta Chi or BCT.
